Why Education Should Feel Possible: Creating Opportunities Where Others Have Seen Obstacles

By Amy Myers, BA, PGCE

For many young people referred to Alternative Provision, education has become something they endure rather than something they participate in. Lessons can feel overwhelming, expectations unrealistic, and success out of reach.

At Apricot Learning, one of the most important goals is helping students rediscover that learning is something they can do.

The Impact of Repeated Setbacks

When a young person experiences repeated difficulties within education, confidence can quickly begin to erode. Missed lessons become missed topics. Missed topics become gaps in understanding. Over time, those gaps can develop into a belief that they simply are not capable of succeeding.

The reality is often very different.

Many students have the ability to achieve but have not had access to an environment that allows them to learn in a way that works for them.

Creating Achievable Challenges

Apricot Learning understands that confidence grows when students experience success.

Lessons are carefully adapted so that challenge remains present, but not overwhelming. Students are encouraged to stretch themselves while receiving the support needed to make progress feel achievable.

This balance is essential. Too much challenge can reinforce feelings of failure, while too little can limit growth. By responding to the student in real time, teachers are able to find the middle ground where learning feels productive and rewarding.

Celebrating Progress Along the Way

One of the strengths of Apricot Learning's approach is recognising that progress takes many forms.

For some students, progress may be completing a qualification. For others, it may be attending consistently, participating in discussion, or developing enough confidence to ask for help when they need it.

These milestones matter because they show a young person beginning to reconnect with education and with their own potential.

Helping Students Believe Again

The most significant change often happens when a student starts to view themselves differently.

Instead of seeing themselves as someone who struggles with education, they begin to recognise what they are capable of achieving. That shift in mindset can influence not only their academic journey but their wider confidence and future aspirations.

At Apricot Learning, helping students believe in themselves is not separate from education. It is an essential part of it.
